The Space Your House Has Been Missing

Unfinished basements are a great way to add finished square footage and with the addition

of an Egress Window, another bedroom. Cost vs. Value always points to finishing existing

square feet as opposed to building additional new square footage. You can’t have a legal

bedroom without a means of egress to the outside, and for most people that means and

egress window. By adding another bedroom you have greatly increased not only the resale

price of your house, but the practicality of your house to both you and a potential buyer.

When I was in the home building business we encouraged people to finish their basements because it really maximized the value of the property. The cost vs value on this is through the roof. People think they have to move when they can finish a basement and really get the most out of their property.

Why are egress window’s necessary? I always hear that it is because of the “fire marshall”. Who is the fire marshall, and why does he care about windows?

all joking aside, it also adds more natural light to the basement. There are few downsides to putting in egress windows.

Got something to say?
